Un Boeing Air France a largué plusieurs tonnes de kérosène au-dessus de la forêt de Fontainebleau. Aircraft drops tons of fuel above Fontainebleu forest.

Un Boeing de la compagnie Air France, qui faisait la liaison entre Paris Orly et Cayenne en Guyane, a été contraint de larguer plusieurs tonnes de carburant au dessus de la forêt de Fontainebleau, selon nos confrères du Parisien. 

An AF Boeing, on a scheduled flight from Orly to Ceyenne in Guyana, was forced to drop most of it’s fuel load above the forest, according to the newspaper Parisien.

L’avion a décollé peu avant 10h30 ce dimanche et il s’est posé vers 12h à Roissy. “L’appareil a dû se poser pour résoudre un problème mineur de pompage au niveau du moteur”, indique un porte-parole de la compagnie, cité par Le Parisien.

The aircraft took-off just before 10h30 last Sunday and it touched down around 12h00 at CDG. “The aircraft turned back to resolve a minor engine pump problem”, said a spokesperson for AF.

Une procédure de sécurité. A safety procedure.

Il n’est pas possible pour un avion de se poser avec des réservoirs quasiment pleins, pour des raisons de sécurité. L’avion a donc vidé plusieurs tonnes de kérosène au dessus de la forêt de Fontainebleau, au sud de Paris. Cette forêt a été la première à recevoir le label national forêt d’exception.

It is not possible for an aircraft to land with full tanks, for safety reasons. So the aircraft had to empty tons of kerosene from it’s fuel tanks above the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris. This forest became to first to be labeled exceptional on a national basis.   

Sur le site Flightradar24, qui permet de visionner les tracés des vols, on peut voir le vol Air France tourner au-dessus de la forêt à plusieurs reprises avant de prendre la direction de Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle pour se poser.

On the Flightradar24 website, showing flight paths, this AF flight did several circuits in a holding pattern above the forest before heading for Roissy CDG to land. (Opinion: ATC would have had to give him a slot to land and the captain would have been on the radio to AF engineering in an effort to resolve the problem in flight by alternate switching. When trouble-shooting failed AF would bring the aircraft back to an airfield that had a suitable replacement aircraft).

Les passagers ont pu prendre un nouveau vol vers Cayenne dans l’après-midi, selon Air France. Passengers switched to another AF aircraft to take their flight in the afternoon.

Des conséquences environnementales ? Environmental consequences?

Dans une réponse à une question posée par un sénateur en 2000, le ministère de l’environnement indique que ces largages ont obligatoirement lieu dans des zones non-urbanisées et que l’avion vole alors au moins à 2 000 mètres d’altitude et à plus de 500 km/h. “Ces conditions permettent au kérosène de se vaporiser ; seule une très faible quantité parvient au sol“, détaille le ministère.

In a response to senate questions in 2000, the environment minister indicated that fuel drops should only happen in non-urban zones from aircraft at least 2000 mtres altitude and more than 500 kms/hr. “At this speed and altitude dropped fuel will vaporise, with only small amounts reaching the ground“, said the minister. (Opinion: It is always preferable for aircraft to dump fuel over the sea. But more difficult in emergency situations over inland airfields, like those in Paris)
