En attendant la grande conférence sur le climat qui doit se tenir en décembre à Paris, les défenseurs de l’environnement militent pour la création de sanctuaires marins dans l’Antarctique, notamment la mer de Ross. Ils veulent protéger l’une des dernières étendues vierges de la planète. L’explorateur Jean-Louis Etienne connaît bien cette zone, il explique son importance écologique.

Waiting on the important climate conference in December in Paris, defenders of the environment are calling for the creation of marine sanctuaries in the Antarctic, notable the Ross Sea (SW Antarctic). They want to protect the last untouched area on the planet. Explorer Jean-Louis Etienne knows the area well and he explains its ecological importance.

Les défenseurs de l’environnement demandent aux dirigeants internationaux de créer deux vastes sanctuaires marins dans l’Antarctique pour protéger l’une des dernières étendues vierges de la planète, où vit un éventail unique d’espèces, dont les calamars géants. “Il y a la volonté de mettre sur place des zones de protection des aires maritimes où les espèces sont tranquilles pour se reproduire“, explique l’explorateur Jean-Louis Etienne. “C’est difficile à obtenir parce qu’il faut l’accord de toutes les nations.”

The defenders of the environment are demanding the international leaders to create two vast marine sanctuaries in the antarctic to protect one of the last virgin spots on the planet, where a range of unique species live, including the giant calamar octopus. “there is a will to put in place maritime protection zones that allow undisturbed areas for the octupus to reproduce, explained the explorer  Jean-Louis Etienne. “It will be difficult to achieve agreement from all nations.” 

Le sort de ces deux projets est pour la cinquième fois entre les mains de la Commission pour la conservation de la faune et de la flore marines de l’Antarctique (CCAMLR), dont la réunion annuelle à Hobart, en Tasmanie (Australie) prendra fin le 30 octobre. Bonne nouvelle, Pékin a accepté l’idée de sanctuariser la mer de Ross, ont annoncé vendredi des négociateurs. Manque l’accord de la Russie. Ce projet est promu par les Etats-Unis et la Nouvelle-Zélande. La mer de Ross, immense baie côté Pacifique, est surnommée “le dernier océan” car c’est le dernier écosystème marin intact de la planète.

The outcome of these two projects is for the fifth time in the hands of the Commission for the conservation  of the Antarctic marine flora and fauna, included in the agenda of the annual meeting in Hobart, Tasmania at the end of Oct. The good news is that Peking have accepted the idea of the Ross Sea sanctuary, as announced on Friday by the negotiators. Missing from the accord is Russia. The project was promised by the USA and NZ. Ross Sea, the immense bay on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, is also named “The last Ocean” because it is the last intact marine ecosystem on the planet.   

Un second projet, porté par la France, l’Australie et l’UE, porte sur la création de quatre aires marines protégées sur une surface de un million de km2 sur la façade est de l’Antarctique.

“Difficile d’avoir des contrôles de pêche” “Difficult to control fishing”

“La Russie et la Corée vont pêcher dans ce secteur. C’est très loin de tout et il est difficile d’avoir des contrôles de pêche. La France est très présente sur l’océan Indien, l’Australie aussi. Ces zones sont difficiles d’accès, mais quand on y va on voit des bateaux qui pêchent, surpêchent sans contrôle.”

La COP21 se tiendra en décembre à Paris et Jean-Louis Etienne espère “qu’on arrivera à un accord minimal. Tout le monde est sensible au réchauffement climatique, les initiatives sont prises et il ne faudrait pas qu’elles soient démoralisées faute d’accord.”

“Russia and Korea fish in the sector. It is too far from everything to control fishing quotas. France is often present in the Indian Ocean, Australia too. These zones are difficult to access, but when fishing ships go there, there is over-fishing without control.” During COP21 in December in Paris Jean-Louis Etienne hopes “we will arrive at a minimum accord. Every one is sensitive about global warming, the initiative taken and they do not want to see the world demoralised by false agreements”. 

Info: The Ross Sea is home to at least 10 mammal species, half a dozen species of birds, 95 species of fish, and over 1,000 invertebrate species. Some species of birds that nest in and near the Ross Sea include the Adelie penguin, emperor penguin, Antarctic petrel, snow petrel, and south polar skua. Marine mammals in the Ross Sea include the Antarctic minke whale, killer whale, Weddell seal, crabeater seal, and leopard seal. Antarctic toothfish, Antarctic silverfish, Antarctic krill, and crystal krill also swim in the cold Antarctic water of the Ross Sea.

The flora and fauna are considered similar to other southern Antarctic marine regions. Particularly in Summer, the nutrient-rich sea water supports an abundant planktonic life in turn providing food for larger species, such as fish, seals, whales, and sea- and shore-birds.
