Pour le quatrième jour d’affilée ce mardi, l’activité du volcan islandais Bardarbunga provoquait l’inquiétude des autorités, qui craignent une éruption perturbant sérieusement le trafic aérien. Une actualité qui rappelle celle de 2010, et l’annulation de 100.000 vols après l’éruption du volcan Eyjafjallajökull.

For the fourth day at a stretch today, the eruption of the Iceland volcano Bardarbunga is worrying the authorities, which could seriously disrupt air traffic. The occasion recalls that of 2010, and the cancellation of 100,000 flights after the eruption of Iceland volcano Eyjafjallajökull.

Depuis samedi, le volcan Bardarbunga est devenu le site le plus scruté d’Islande. Depuis qu’il montre des signes d’activité, il rappelle de très mauvais souvenir aux autorités ; des souvenirs datant de 2010 exactement, quand le volcan Eyjafjallajökull avait provoqué l’annulation de plus de 100.000 vols sur un mois.

Since Saturday, the site of the volcano Bardarbunga has become the most scrutinised in Iceland. Since it started to show signs of activity, it is bringing back the authorities worst memories; those of 2010 exactly, when the eruption back then caused air traffic chaos for a month.

Situé dans le sud de l’île, sous un glacier de la taille de la Corse, le Bardarbunga s’est réveillé il y a quatre jours. Depuis, quelque 2.600 séismes ont été enregistrés. Suffisant pour que l’institut météorologique islandais relève à “orange” son niveau d’alerte pour l’aviation. Le niveau suivant, le “rouge”, n’est activé qu’en cas d’éruption. En cas de fumées importantes, il pourrait provoquer d’importantes perturbations dans le nord de l’Europe et dans l’Atlantique-Nord.

Situated in the south of the island, under a glacier the size of Corsica, Bardarbunga woke up four days ago. Since then 2,600 seismic bursts were recorded. Enough for the Meteorological Institute of Iceland to launch an “orange” alert for aviation. The next level, “red” is not activated unless there is an eruption. In the case of large plumes of smoke, it could cause a lot of disruption in northern Europe and the north Atlantic.   

Au-delà des risques de perturbations pour le trafic aérien, une éruption pourrait provoquer des dégâts matériels, même si pour l’instant, insiste Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff, volcanologue aux universités de Cergy Pontoise et Paris-Sud Orsay, l’activité du Bardarbunga reste réduite.
