En mars 2015, dix personnes mourraient sur le tournage de l’émission Dropped, dont plusieurs sportifs de haut-niveau comme Florence Arthaud, Alexis Vastine, et Camille Muffat. Jeudi, l’équivalent du BEA argentin a rendu public un rapport qui lève le voile sur les causes du crash de ces deux hélicoptères.

In March 2015, ten people died during the filming of the TV show Dropped, including many elite sports people like Florence Arthaud, Alexis Vastine, and Camille Muffat. On Thursday 17 December the Argentinian equivalent of the French accident investigation authority (Bureau d’Enquete Aviation) made public the report that lifts the veil on the causes of the crash of the two helicopters. 

Le 9 mars 2015, le jeu d’aventure “Dropped”, vire à la tragédie. Deux hélicoptères qui participaient au tournage de l’émission deTF1, se percutent en vol. Dix personnes meurent, les deux  pilotes et les huit passagers. Parmi eux les sportifs Florence Arthaud, Alexis Vastine, et Camille Muffat. Neuf mois après le drame. Le rapport d’enquête de l’équivalent du BEA argentin, est enfin rendu public et sans être catégorique, il soulève de nombreux doutes sur la sécurité. Le JIAAC (Junta de Investigación de Accidentes de Aviación Civil) révèle que la collision est due à une erreur de pilotage : “Après environ deux minutes de vol, à l’ouest de la zone de décollage, les appareils sont entrés en collision en vol et se sont écrasés au sol” peut-on lire sur le site internet du JIAAC.

On 9th March 2015, the adventure TV show “Dropped” led to tragedy. Two helicopters who worked on the programme for TF1, crashed in flight. Ten people died, the two pilots and eight passengers. Among them sports stars Florence Arthaud, Alexis Vastine, and  Camille Muffat. Nine months after the tragic event, the report of the equivalent of the BEA has finally been made public without being categorical, it raises a number of safety doubts. The  JIAAC (Junta de Investigación de Accidentes de Aviación Civil) revealed that the collision was due to pilot error: “After about two minutes flight, in the west of the take-off zone, the aircraft collided in flight and crashed into the ground” can be read on the JIAAC website.  

Le rapport de 50 pages précise que “le facteur déclencheur de cet accident a été le défaut d’appréciation des pilotes de la proximité ou du manque de séparation de leurs aéronefs respectifs. Ce manque d’appréciation a entraîné la collision aérienne des aéronefs sans aucune tentative de manoeuvre évasive ou d’évitement.” Ces informations ont rendu furieuse la mère d’une des victimes, Bénédicte Meï. Elle est la mère de Lucie Meï-Dalby, 37 ans, journaliste tuée dans le crash. “Trop rapide, trop proche, mal préparé, criminel. Il n’y a pas eu de panne mécanique, dit Bénédicte, il n’y a pas eu de problème de ce genre, c’est dû simplement à l’impréparation du vol : ils l’ont décidé au dernier moment, la veille pour le lendemain.” Pour elle, même si “les pilotes étaient peut-être de bonne qualité, ils ne se connaissaient pas et n’avaient jamais volé ensemble“. Elle en conclut donc qu’”il y a quelque chose qui frôle l’impréparation, ça en est criminel. (…) Ils ont volé 191 secondes, c’est rapide, trop rapide, trop proche, mal préparé, criminel”.

The 50 page report specifies that “the factor leading to this accident was the lack of appreciation of the pilots of their proximity and the lack of separation of their respective aircraft. This lack of appreciation led to the collision of the aircraft without evidence of attempting any evasive movement. ” This information led to a furious reaction by the mother of one of the victims,  Bénédicte Meï. She is the mother of Lucie Meï-Dalby, a 37 years old journalist killed in the crash. “Too fast, too close, badly prepared, criminal. It was not a technical failure, said Benedicte, it was not a problem of this sort, it was simply an unprepared flight: they decided at the last minute, late on the eve for the next day.” For her, although “the pilots were well qualified, they didn’t know as they had never  flown together”. She concluded that “there are several issues which led to the lack of preparation, it was criminal. (…) They flew for 191 seconds, fast, too fast, too close, badly prepared, criminal”.

Another literary project is that of commemoration of an aircraft crash on Djouce mountain in Wicklow in 1946. Bill wrote articles for the 50th, 60th and most recently the 70th anniversary, (12 Aug 2016) all were published in the Wicklow Times and ensured the survivors of the crash, all French Girl Guides, were not forgotten. Each article is translated on a paragraph by paragraph basis so easy to read in either language and even possible to improve either language by comparison of the short English and French paragraphs.
