Air France to return to Teheran

Air France de retour à Téhéran, une aubaine pour Airbus et Boeing. (AF to return to Teheran, A Godsend for Airbus and Boeing)

Après sept ans d’absence, Air France va faire son retour à Téhéran, en avril prochain. Un retour prudent, puisque la liaison sera effectuée en A320 à raison de trois rotations par semaine. Avant de retrouver le rythme de croisière d’avant les sanctions, un vol par jour en A340, Air France devra s’armer de patience.

After an absence of seven years, Air France are set to return to Teheran next April. A careful and studied return, using an A320 with three rotations per week. Before recovering their rhythm of growth before sanctions were imposed, of one A340 flight per day, AF will have to be patient.

Iran is still classified as a terrorist country by the USA.

Comme la levée des sanctions sur les activités civiles se fait attendre, de sérieux obstacles demeurent, au premier rang desquels, les transferts internationaux. L’Iran a notamment les plus grandes difficultés à payer ses fournisseurs étrangers. Et il est toujours quasi impossible sur place de payer avec sa carte de crédit. L’Iran étant toujours classé comme pays terroriste par les États-Unis.

With the lifting of sanctions on commercial activities, serious obstacles pop up and probably the first of those are international payment transfers. Iran has huge difficulties in paying foreign suppliers. It is still almost impossible to make credit card payments. And Iran is still classified as a country supporting terrorism. 

Un fort potentiel pour Air France. Great potential for AF.

Air France et l’Iran, c’est une longue histoire, fruit de relations politiques, diplomatiques et culturelles anciennes. En 1979, en pleine révolution islamique, c’est à bord d’un Boeing 747 d’Air France que l’Ayatollah Khomeiny était rentré en Iran de son exil en France. Il allait prendre le pouvoir quelques semaines plus tard. Comme de nombreuses entreprises, Air France entend aujourd’hui profiter du retour de l’Iran dans le concert des nations. L’Iran n’est pas la Chine, mais avec ses 80 millions d’habitants, le potentiel est bien là. Dans le secteur de l’aéronautique, les besoins sont énormes. La flotte iranienne s’apparente à un véritable musée de l’aviation. La moyenne d’âge des avions d’Iran Air, la compagnie nationale, de vieux Airbus A300, A310 et quelques 320 est de 26 ans. Et nous ne parlons pas des 747 achetés, avant la révolution à l’époque ou le Shah était proche de Washington.

There is long history between France and Iran; fruitful political, diplomatic and long-standing cultural  relationships. In 1979, in the midst of the  Islamic revolution, it was aboard an AF Boeing 747 that Ayatollah Khomeiny returned to Iran from France, his country of exile. He took over power a few weeks later. Like many large companies, Air France intend to profit from Iran returning to the community of nations. Iran isn’t exactly China but with it’s 80 million inhabitants, the potential is there. In the aviation sector, Iran has huge needs. The Iranian fleet appears like a veritable aviation museum. The middle-age aircraft of Iran Air; the aged Airbus A300, A310 and a few A320s are 26 years old. And we haven’t mentioned the the B747s bought before the revolution in the era when the Shah was politically close to Washington.

Du coup, pendant des années, Iran Air a du se débrouiller avec les moyens du bord, soit en cannibalisant ses avions cloués au sol, soit en achetant des pièces au marché noir. Iran Air, qui au passage, a continué, pendant l’embargo, à assurer ses liaisons sur Orly. Pas simple pour une compagnie qui ne pouvait pas refueler en France. Pour Airbus et Boeing, le marché est estimé entre 400 et 500 appareils pour un montant de plus de 20 milliards de dollars. Il faut à peu près tout remplacer. La guerre commerciale se prépare entre les États-Unis et l’Europe. D’autant attendue avec l’Iran, que du côté de la Russie le business est désormais totalement bloqué.

All told, during the years, Iran Air got by with whatever means they had, be it by robbing parts from grounded aircraft, or be it buying parts on the black market. During the embargoes, it kept its links to Orly open. Not easy for a company which could not refuel in France. For Airbus and Boeing the market is estimated at between 400 and 500 aircraft amounting to more than 20 billion $. Close to the whole fleet needs to be replaced. The commercial war is being prepared between the USA and Europe. On the other front with Iran, that of the Russian side seems, at this point, to be totally blocked.

Another literary project is that of commemoration of an aircraft crash on Djouce mountain in Wicklow in 1946. Bill wrote articles for the 50th, 60th and most recently the 70th anniversary, (12 Aug 2016) all were published in the Wicklow Times and ensured the survivors of the crash, all French Girl Guides, were not forgotten. Articles reproduced on this website. But mostly this site gives a more general European and specific French slant on popular and not so popular articles of French news, translated to English by the author. Each article is translated on a paragraph by paragraph basis so easy to read in either language and even possible to improve either language by comparison of the short English and French paragraphs. Amusez vous bien. The author is currently writing an easy to read technical aviation book centered around the Fokker 50. Another interest is that dealt with in another of Bill's websites www.realnamara.net, a Statue of the mother of God, Mary. It was erected in 1972 in Dublin, at the end of the Bull Wall near Clontarf, and my grandfather William Nelson, was the main instigator of that project.
