La maire de Bangui, Catherine Samba-Panza, a été élue lundi présidente de transition par le parlement centrafricain lors d’une séance publique, avec pour mission première de ramener la paix dans un pays déchiré par des tueries interreligieuses.

The mayor of Bangui, Catherine Samba-Panza, on Monday was elected transitional president by the CAR parliament during a public session, with a first priority to regain peace in the country torn apart by inter-religious killings.

Elle succède à Michel Djotodia, le chef de l’ancienne coalition rebelle Séléka, qui a remis sa démission le 10 janvier sous la pression de la communauté internationale.

She succeeds Michel Djotodia, the chief of the Séléka rebel coalition, who resigned on 10th January under international community pressure. 

Catherine Samba-Panza a été élue au second tour avec 75 voix, devançant l’autre candidat, Désiré Kolingba, fils d’un ancien chef de l’Etat, qui a obtenu 53 suffrages.

Catherine Samba-Panza was elected on the second round with 75 votes, ahead of the other candidate, Désiré Kolingba, son of the former head of state, who received 53 votes.

“Déposez vos armes” a-t-elle lancé (“Lay down your arms” she asked.

La nouvelle présidente a aussitôt lancé un “appel vibrant” à déposer les armes. Elle va devoir tenter de sortir le pays de la spirale de violences dans laquelle il est plongé depuis plusieurs mois. 

The new president also launched a “passionate appeal” to lay down the arms. She wants to get the country out of the spiral of violence in which it was plunged for many months.

“A compter de ce jour, je suis la présidente de tous les Centrafricains sans exclusive” “Starting today, I am president of all CARs without exception”.

“Manifestez votre adhésion à ma nomination en donnant un signal fort de dépôt des armes“ a-t-elle dit à l’attention des miliciens chrétiens anti-balaka avant de s’adresser aux ex-Séléka, “déposez vos armes“, pour faire “cesser la souffrance des populations“.

“Demonstrate your support for my nomination and give a strong signal of laying down the arms” she said for to the Christian militias anti-balaka before the address to the ex-Séléka, “lay down your arms”, to make” a cease of the suffering of the people”.

L’UE valide l’envoi de 1.000 soldats. The EU authorises sending 1000 soldiers.

Le chef de l’Etat français François Hollande a félicité la nouvelle présidente, soulignant qu'”il lui revient désormais de mener à bien la réconciliation et l’apaisement nécessaires en RCA, en vue de la tenue d’élections démocratiques“, et précisant que la France se tenait “à ses côtés dans cette tâche immense“. Le secrétaire général de l’ONU, Ban Ki-Moon, a appelé à une “action immédiate et concertée“.

The head of the French state Francois Hollande congratulated the new president, stressing that “it will return from now on the reconciliation and calm necessary in the CAR, with a view to presenting democratic elections”, and precisely that France will be “on its side in this immense task”. (End of 2014 or early 2015). The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, called for “concerted and immediate action”.

Lundi, à Bruxelles, les ministres des Affaires étrangères de l’Union européenne ont donné leur feu vert à l’envoi d’un contingent d’un millier d’hommes en Centrafrique en appui des troupes françaises et de l’Onu déjà déployées pour tenter de mettre fin aux violences. Il s’agira de la première opération militaire d’importance de l’UE depuis six ans.

On Monday, in Brussels, the EU foreign affairs ministers have given the green light to send a 1,000 man contingent to CAR in a push with the French troops and the UN already deployed in an effort to put an end to the violence. It will be the first and largest EU military operation for six years.
