French agriculture damaged by late frost.

Agriculture : vignes et vergers durement touchés par le gel. Vines and orchards hit by frost.

La chute des températures observée ces derniers jours n’épargne personne. L’hiver joue les prolongations au grand dam des producteurs de fruits et des viticulteurs. Certains ont mis en place des mesures spectaculaires pour lutter contre le gel.

The fall in temperatures seen over the last few days has spared no one. The prolonged winter is playing out much to the detriment of the fruit and wine producers. Some have put in place spectacular measure to fight the fight against the frost.

Pour Philippe Leymat, difficile de garder le moral devant l’état de ses vignes à Branceilles (Corrèze). Le gel a détruit toute une partie de ses plantations. Il s’attend à perdre 70% de sa récolte. La météo se fait capricieuse sur une bonne partie de la France. En moins de deux semaines, plusieurs nuits de gel ont été observées.

For Philippe Leymat, it is difficult to keep his morale up when faced with the state of his vines in Branceilles in the Corréze (Department 19, Region Limousin, Central France and home constituency of Francois Hollande). Leymat expects to lose 70% of his harvest. The weather has been temperamental over a good part of France. At least in the last two weeks, where many nights of frost have been seen.

Près de Bordeaux, les viticulteurs courbent l’échine. Dans cette exploitation, à Cocumont (Lot-et-Garonne), la perte est déjà estimée à 70 000 euros. Au nord, près de Lille, ce sont les fruits qui ont souffert. Cette poire, par exemple, ne pourra pas se former. Son coeur a été brûlé par le gel. Franck Tellier, arboriculteur, est affligé : “Parfois, on peut tomber sur un bouquet où il y a une de bonne. On annonce des dégâts entre 80% et 100%“.

Close to Bordeaux, the wine growers backs are bent. In Cocumont (Lot-et-Garonne, Department 47), the loss is already estimated at €70,000. In the Nord (Department 59, close to Lille and the Belgian border), it’s the fruit that is suffering. Pears for example can not form, it has been hit hard by frost.  Growers are using sophisticated ducting to spray warm misty water on the trees at night. Franck Tellier, tree grower is distressed: “If one could cover the flower it would be ok, but already 80 to 100% are damaged”

Bill is a member of the Drama League of Ireland and his plays have been critically vetted and certified as original pieces of work by the DLI. Another literary project is that of commemoration of an aircraft crash on Djouce mountain in Wicklow in 1946. Bill wrote articles for the 50th, 60th and most recently the 70th anniversary, (12 Aug 2016) all were published in the Wicklow Times and ensured the survivors of the crash, all French Girl Guides, were not forgotten. But mostly this site gives a more general European and specific French slant on popular and not so popular articles of French news, translated to English by the author. Each article is translated on a paragraph by paragraph basis so easy to read in either language and even possible to improve either language by comparison of the short English and French paragraphs. Amusez vous bien. The author is currently writing an easy to read technical aviation book centered around the Fokker 50. Another interest is that dealt with in another of Bill's websites www.realnamara.net, a Statue of the mother of God, Mary. It was erected in 1972 in Dublin, at the end of the Bull Wall near Clontarf, and my grandfather William Nelson, was the main instigator of that project.
