A new investigation is taking place in Air France, doubled on by the Bureau Enquete Analyse (Bureau of investigation and analysis.) It concerns a Paris-Mexico flight on 22 May last, where the Boeing flight crew entered incorrect information, they been given, into the computer system. This caused an upset for the take-off and a slight mix-up for the pilots. This is the second investigation on an AF aircraft this month (The first involved an AF aircraft being escorted by two fighter aircraft when going off course).
Air France launched a new internal investigation on the 22 May incident on board a Boeing cargo aircraft en route from Paris CDG to Mexico city. The computer output caused the crew to take manual control of the aircraft during take-off. The BEA are carrying out their own investigation.
Erreur de saisie informatique. Computer error calculations.
A few days ago AF confirmed a previous internal investigation concerning another one of it’s B777, when it narrowly missed colliding with Mount Cameroon in Africa due to avoiding a storm.
This time the investigation centres around errors in computer calculations.
The CDG – Mexico flight experienced problems on T/O when the engine rating panel settings (normally automatic) were over-ridden by the crew.
Le poids de l’appareil sous-estimé. T/O weight underestimated.
The overall weight of the aircraft was under-estimated by a hundred tonnes (about a quarter of the max T/O weight), leading the system to drive the engine trust less than necessary for take-off. The real danger would lead the aircraft to attempt to leave the ground prematurely, with the attendant risk of the tail striking the ground, (at the very minimum.)
The pilots were forced to take control of the engine thrust, before they continued enroute to Mexico. The aircraft was grounded on arrival at it’s destination, waiting for conclusions of the investigation. A BEA spokes person said they were also carrying out an investigation.
