Depuis 1974, sur l’île prisée des touristes, d’un côté, il y a la République de Chypre, principalement peuplée de Chypriotes grecs, et le Nord, contrôlé par la Turquie. Une “ligne verte” sépare l’île en deux, une zone sécurisée par les soldats de l’ONU. Mais l’année 2015 semble placée sous le signe de la réconciliation. En mai dernier, le dirigeant chypriote grec, Nicos Anastasiades, et son homologue chypriote turc, Mustafa Akinci, se sont rencontrés pour la première fois depuis l’élection de ce dernier. Depuis le 27 juillet, les négociateurs de chaque pays se sont entretenus onze fois, a rapporté l’ONU, qui encadre les discussions. Mardi, une nouvelle rencontre a eu lieu entre les deux leaders. Ils doivent se réunir à nouveau mi-septembre.

Since 1974, on an island filled with tourists on one side, the Republic of Cyprus, peopled mainly by Greek Cypriots, the north is under Turkish control. A “green line” separates the island in two with a security zone manned by UN soldiers. But 2015 has a feel of reconciliation about it. Last May, the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades, and his Turkish Cypriot opposite number Mustafa Akinci, met for the first time since the last election. Since 27 July, each county’s negotiators have spoken on eleven occasions, as reported by the UN, who facilitated  the discussions. A new meeting took place on Tuesday between the two leaders. They have to meet again in mid-September.

Un réchauffement diplomatique qui ramène sur la table des négociations l’idée de réunification, après plusieurs tentatives ratées ces vingt dernières années. Cette division mine l’île depuis 1974, date de l’invasion du nord de l’île par la Turquie, en réaction à un coup d’état militaire grec. Cette partie de l’île, sous contrôle turc et nommée République de Chypre du Nord, n’est pas reconnue par la communauté internationale.

Diplomatic détante exists across the negotiating table on the idea of reunification, after many tentative failures over the last twenty years. This division has undermined the island since 1974, the date of the invasion by Turkey in the north of the country, in reaction to the Greek military coup d’état.
