Un skieur de 37 ans a perdu la vie dans une avalanche ce matin à Val d’Isère dans les Alpes. Une autre personne a été blessée dans une seconde avalanche dans la même station.

A 37 year old Spanish skier lost his life this morning in an avalanche in the Alps (Val d’Isère). Another person was injured in a second avalanche at the same station.

Depuis trois jours, il est tombé au total sur les pistes de Val d’Isère 65 centimètres de neige. De quoi sérieusement fragiliser le manteau neigeux. Et c’est ce qui a provoqué les deux avalanches constatées ce matin dans la station alpine.

In the past three days 65 centimetres of snow fell on the slopes of the Val d’Isère leaving an unstable snow coat. This provoked the two avalanches experienced this morning on the Alpine station.

Vers 10h30, une première avalanche a été déclenchée alors que trois skieurs français, employés de la station, évoluaient en hors piste, sur le massif de Bellevarde. Deux d’entre eux ont été blessés légèrement et secourus. Le troisième, un skieur français, est dans un état grave. “Les blessés étaient équipés de DVA [détecteur de victime d’avalanche, ndlr], ce qui leur a permis d’être retrouvés par les pisteurs secouristes”, explique un responsable de la station.

At approximately 10h30, a first avalanche let go, when at the same time three French skiers, employees of the station, were operating beyond the slopes on the massif de Bellevarde. Two of the three were slightly injured and rescued. The third is in a more serious condition. “The injured were equipped with AVD [avalanche victim detectors] (ELT: Emergency Locator Transmitter), making them easily located by the mountain rescuers”.   

“On venait de finir cette première avalanche et de ranger le matériel quand on a eu une deuxième avalanche” explique Jean-Pierre Aguillon, le directeur de la régie des pistes de Val d’Isère. La seconde avalanche s’est déclenchée sur une piste fermée depuis le début de saison.  Quinze pisteurs et deux chiens d’avalanches ont été dépêchés sur place. Malgré cela, les secours n’ont pas réussi à réanimer la victime, un homme de 37 ans de nationalité espagnole. Il n’était pas équipé d’un détecteur de victimes d’avalanches, selon la station.

“We had finished with the first avalanche and gathering up our equipment when there was a second avalanche” explained Jean-Pierre Aguillon, the chief of the Val d’Isere mountain rescue brigades. The second avalanche let go on slopes that have been closed since the start of the season. Fifteen mountaineers and two avalanche dogs were dispatched immediately. Despite that, the rescuers were not successful in reviving the 37 year old Spanish victim. He was not equipped with an ELT, according to the station.
