48 volt car on the way soon.

48 volts : bientôt les voitures sous haute tension

L’auto lundi 24 novembre 2014

There are more and more electric functions in cars. So, we are perhaps on the eve of a minor technological revolution.

Always advantages in function and equipment, and even more so in the years ahead. There is always a need for more electricity power. The electrical power that a battery has to store up – so – a bigger capacity.

For a long time, engineers have envisaged the need for more and more electrical capacity. And this could lead to the use of 48 volts – not for all the electric functions of your car, but for certain ones (the other stay at 12 volts, like today). This increased electrical capacity will be the average needs of cars of the future. This will, for the most part, allow for limited losses in the electrical circuits. Because to allow “much” electric current flow, in a 12 volt system, this makes voltage loses in cables and electrical wires; pure and simple this is a waste (gaspillage).

There will have to be, in your car, a second battery.

A supplementary battery will be installed, and a technological battery; lithium, so expensive. But it will last, as a priority, the life of the car. This extra battery can feed, for example, air conditioning: the “cold air generator” which can be driven electrically and not by the engine. Equally other peripheral activities of the engine can be driven electrically, the extra feeds: the compressor for example. Equipment maker Valeo, the first in the world electrical compressor. For all these, all the better functionality, won’t be “pumping” or loading the engine, but from an independent electric feed. Leading to using less energy.

Au total, de réelles économies de carburant. Making for fuel efficiency.

Air conditioning per day consumes 0.5 to 0.8 litre of fuel. With this new technology, aircon fuel consummation is cut to a quarter! The use of a 48 volts system therefore lowers general fuel consumption of your car. Not by a lot, but by a bit. This technology also allows that the energy saved can be increased during use of head-lights, brakes, etc, (this also gives less waste). In the average car, fuel saving can be of the order of 0.4 ltr / 100 kms.

Opinion: Many aircraft use two batteries, each of 24 volts. Lead acid is mostly replaced now by Nickle Cadmium and more recently by Lithium Ion (Boeing had it’s problems with thermal runaway). On the Shorts 360 it had three batteries, two 24 volts and a 12 volts. The latter was used in the event of an electrical failure and it provided power to initiate an inflight windmill start of the propeller engines. (Pratt & Whitney PT6). On the turbo-prop SAAB 340 aircraft it used a unique technology in that it put it’s two 24 volt batteries in series just during the start cycle of the first engine. This gave the GE engine starter motor 48 volts to really waken it up. Once started, the batteries then reverted to the normal parallel circuit arrangement. How  often we wished, on a freezing cold morning, that our cars had this ability. Perhaps Audi, or other can manufacturers installing two batteries,  would modify the starting circuits to accommodate a ‘cold start’ option. I used this on a SAAB 340 in Kevlavik (Iceland) when the GPU (Ground Power Unit) wasn’t powerful enough to start the engine. Bingo we started with 48 volts and continued across the Atlantic without any further problems.

About bill

Worked in the technical / engineering area as a Science Laboratory Technician and as an Aeronautics Engineer. The artistic side involves writing under the nom de plume of Billy Olsenn, his recently written play 'A Case of Wine' was staged by the players group Straight Make-Up at the 2012 Birr one act drama festival. It's next staging was in the one act circuit is in Cavan, at Maudebawn on Sat 10 Nov 2012. Then it was performed in the Bray, Co.Wicklow at the very popular one act festival in January 2013. Next play is FEAR. A dark tale about revenge on the cruel death of two pensioners by young thugs. Neighbours hatch a devious and dangerous plan to exact old-style revenge. Bill is a member of the Drama League of Ireland and his plays have been critically vetted and certified as original pieces of work by the DLI. Another literary project is that of commemoration of an aircraft crash on Djouce mountain in Wicklow in 1946. Bill wrote articles for the 50th, 60th and most recently the 70th anniversary, (12 Aug 2016) all were published in the Wicklow Times and ensured the survivors of the crash, all French Girl Guides, were not forgotten. Articles reproduced on this website. But mostly this site gives a more general European and specific French slant on popular and not so popular articles of French news, translated to English by the author. Each article is translated on a paragraph by paragraph basis so easy to read in either language and even possible to improve either language by comparison of the short English and French paragraphs. Amusez vous bien. The author is currently writing an easy to read technical aviation book centered around the Fokker 50. Another interest is that dealt with in another of Bill's websites www.realnamara.net, a Statue of the mother of God, Mary. It was erected in 1972 in Dublin, at the end of the Bull Wall near Clontarf, and my grandfather William Nelson, was the main instigator of that project. I give talks on the history of the statue and my grandfather's adventurous and dangerous life at sea. Technical assistance with each website is by J O'N.
