The company has decided to organise a special flight around France skies on 14th Jan for it’s many enthusiasts of the “Jumbo Jet”. With a unique flight nr: AF747, tickets on sale from Monday at one price of €220, will take off from Roissy CDG at 11h30, for a two hour trip and will include a champagne breakfast and a conference. On returning to Roissy, the event will be finished off by a visit to the maintenance hangars, followed by “a last drink at the foot of the aircraft”

Dernier vol régulier le 11 janvier. Last scheduled flight on 11 January.

For those who prefer, the last commercial scheduled flight is expected on 11 Jan, between Mexico and Paris. The aircraft, register F-GITI will land at Roissy-CDG at 13h30, before being retired from service. Entering service on 3 June 1970 on the Paris-New York route, the B747 was for a long time the main work-horse of the AF long-haul routes. In total, AF took delivery of 52 B747, from the first 747-100 received on 12 May 1970 up until the 747-400, including the last delivery which arrived in 2003. In the 1990s the 747 has none-the-less been bit by bit replaced in the AF heart, by the more fuel efficient B777. The arrival of the A380 accelerated it’s decline. Unlike Lufthansa, AF has not ordered the 747-8, the most recent stretched modernised version, that continues in production by customer option, in Seattle, but has not succeeded to impose itself against the A380.

Les pilotes de 747 reclassés sur 777 ou A320. 747 pilots to be converted onto the B777 or A320.

The last 747 cargo versions have already left the AF fleet in 2014. The departure of the last five 747-400 passenger versions were confirmed last summer after the signing of an agreement on the arrangements for reclassifying over 100 pilots – 50 captains and 64 co-pilots – affected by the ceasing of the “747 operation”. In the terms of that agreement, the pilots who wish so will avail of retraining on the B777 or A320. Otherwise, with the exception of an aircraft that might find itself being taken by an African airline, that last few AF 747-400 leaving service will probably be scrapped. A special witness of a bygone age,  also part of the golden age of AF, will be the 747-100 in the museum at Le Bourget.

The 747 still in service with Lufthansa and BA.

On the other hand, other companies will continue to utilise the B747 for many years yet. This is the case at Lufthansa, who have ordered 19 B747-8 new version, but also BA who are re-kitting 18 B747-400, being half it’s current fleet – and replicating the same seats and cabin as the its A380 and its B787 aircraft. For as long as the present course of oil prices continue, the “Jumbo Jet” has not yet spoken it’s last word!

About bill

Worked in the technical / engineering area as a Science Laboratory Technician and as an Aeronautics Engineer. The artistic side involves writing under the nom de plume of Billy Olsenn, his recently written play 'A Case of Wine' was staged by the players group Straight Make-Up at the 2012 Birr one act drama festival. It's next staging was in the one act circuit is in Cavan, at Maudebawn on Sat 10 Nov 2012. Then it was performed in the Bray, Co.Wicklow at the very popular one act festival in January 2013. Next play is FEAR. A dark tale about revenge on the cruel death of two pensioners by young thugs. Neighbours hatch a devious and dangerous plan to exact old-style revenge. Bill is a member of the Drama League of Ireland and his plays have been critically vetted and certified as original pieces of work by the DLI. Another literary project is that of commemoration of an aircraft crash on Djouce mountain in Wicklow in 1946. Bill wrote articles for the 50th, 60th and most recently the 70th anniversary, (12 Aug 2016) all were published in the Wicklow Times and ensured the survivors of the crash, all French Girl Guides, were not forgotten. Articles reproduced on this website. But mostly this site gives a more general European and specific French slant on popular and not so popular articles of French news, translated to English by the author. Each article is translated on a paragraph by paragraph basis so easy to read in either language and even possible to improve either language by comparison of the short English and French paragraphs. Amusez vous bien. The author is currently writing an easy to read technical aviation book centered around the Fokker 50. Another interest is that dealt with in another of Bill's websites www.realnamara.net, a Statue of the mother of God, Mary. It was erected in 1972 in Dublin, at the end of the Bull Wall near Clontarf, and my grandfather William Nelson, was the main instigator of that project. I give talks on the history of the statue and my grandfather's adventurous and dangerous life at sea. Technical assistance with each website is by J O'N.
